Analyzing data

Merchandisers use data to identify trends, potential risks, and opportunities. They also analyze bestsellers to ensure they reach their full potential.

Managing inventory

Merchandisers monitor inventory levels, submit inventory reports, and stock shelves and displays. They also control stock levels based on forecasts.

Collaborating with others

Merchandisers work with buyers, analysts, stores, suppliers, and distributors. They also collaborate with executives, marketers, and salespeople to set prices.

Creating sales plans

Merchandisers plan product ranges, sales, and stock plans. They also forecast profits and sales, and optimize sales volume and profitability.

Creating displays

Merchandisers work with visual display staff and department heads to decide how goods should be displayed. They also assess the effectiveness of different product displays and store layouts.

Communicating

Merchandisers communicate customer problems to the company and address customer issues. They also use written and spoken communication skills to collaborate with suppliers, manufacturers, and stores.

Monitoring competitors

Merchandisers maintain awareness of competitors' performance, including pricing, profit, and marketing.

Some companies may require a degree in graphic design, visual communications, or visual merchandising for a merchandiser role. A bachelor degree in advertising, marketing, or business can also be helpful.
