Purpose of the role
The Senior Legal Researcher supports Australian criminal defence practitioners by preparing high-quality written materials, structured legal analysis and case-ready research. The role assists with drafting, evidence review and AI-supported analysis under supervision. This is a non-client-facing support position that requires precision, legal reasoning and the ability to follow established frameworks used by Australian counsel.
Responsibilities and duties
Written advocacy and drafting support
Prepare well-structured written materials for criminal and quasi-criminal matters under the direction of Australian lawyers.
Draft written submissions, summaries and structured notes based on approved precedents and templates.
Assist with preparing draft plea materials and written representations using file materials and instructions from supervising lawyers.
Ensure accuracy, clarity and alignment with relevant Australian legislation, case law and sentencing principles as directed.
AI-assisted legal analysis and structured outputs
Use internal closed-workflow AI tools to produce structured outputs including chronologies, inconsistency tables, charge breakdowns, penalty summaries, case-law extracts and evidentiary analysis.
Review, correct and validate AI-generated outputs to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Provide quality control support for outputs generated by junior researchers.
Template and document preparation
Prepare, update and maintain internal templates, structured documents and written frameworks used across criminal law matters.
Assist with formatting and structuring documents suitable for downstream integration into approved systems.
Research, accuracy checks and content review
Maintain and update internal reference materials such as judicial notes, court process tables, listings and procedural guides.
Conduct research into Australian criminal legislation and case law as required.
Review legal content prepared by the internal writing team to ensure accuracy of law, process and terminology.
Perform accuracy checks on junior researcher work and provide structured feedback.

Any document intended for external release is issued only after internal review and sign-off under applicable protocols.

Qualifications and experience
Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
One to three years of experience in legal research, analytical writing or structured drafting roles.
Experience preparing written summaries, research memos or factual analysis in a professional environment.
