A Junior Accountant typically handles a variety of accounting tasks under the supervision of a senior accountant or accounting manager. Their responsibilities include maintaining financial records preparing financial statements and assisting with accounts payable and receivable. They also play a role in month-end and year-end closing processes as well as assisting with audits.
Key Responsibilities :
Financial Record Keeping :
Maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records including general ledger entries and reconciliations.
Accounts Payable / Receivable :
Managing accounts payable (paying invoices) and accounts receivable (issuing invoices).
Financial Reporting :
Assisting in the preparation of financial statements reports and budgets.
Month-End / Year-End Close :
Participating in the closing of accounting periods and ensuring accurate financial information.
Audits :
Assisting with both internal and external audits.
Compliance :
Ensuring adherence to financial policies regulations and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Payroll :
May assist with payroll processing including calculating and submitting taxes.
Essential Skills :
Accounting Knowledge : A strong foundation in basic accounting principles and practices.
Software Proficiency : Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks Tally or SAP as well as Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills : The ability to analyze financial data identify discrepancies and resolve issues.
Attention to Detail : Accuracy and meticulousness in handling financial information are crucial.
Communication Skills : Effective communication to interact with colleagues senior staff and potentially external stakeholders.
Time Management : Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience :
A bachelors degree in accounting or a related field (finance commerce) is generally required.
Some employers prefer candidates with a masters degree or relevant certifications.
Experience through internships or entry-level positions in accounting is often preferred.
Work experience as an Accountant. Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Hands-on experience with accounting software like FreshBooks and QuickBooks. Advanced MS Excel skills including Vlookups and pivot tables.
