About the role
We’re seeking a highly experienced Principal Data Scientist to join our Operational DER Management team. This role is pivotal in developing processes and tools to integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into AEMO’s operational systems. You’ll work with large, complex datasets to understand DER behaviours and their impact on power system security.
What you will be doing
- Conduct quantitative analysis of large DER datasets to understand behaviours during power system disturbances.
- Develop and enhance tools for DER data analysis.
- Collaborate with stakeholders including Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs), Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and third-party data providers (e.g., Solar Analytics).
- Investigate and interpret data from sources such as the DER Register, Clean Energy Regulator, smart meters, PMUs, and high-speed power quality meters.
- Advocate for management approaches to address DER impacts on system security.
- Prepare high-quality reports and presentations for internal and external audiences.
- Work closely with other AEMO teams and external partners to support DER integration.
What you will bring to the role
Extensive professional experience in a related discipline.Tertiary qualifications in electrical engineering, data science, computer science, or similar.Proven experience working with DER datasets in Australia—ideally at a DNSP, university, OEM, or data provider.Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, Grafana).Expertise in handling large datasets including NMI-level DER generation data, AMI data, and PMU data.Excellent problem-solving, modelling, and critical thinking abilities.Ability to produce clear, insightful analysis and documentation.In return some of our benefits to you
