POSITION – Head of Primary School

REPORTING TO - Principal

INSTITUTION – The Khaitan School, Sector - 40, Noida

Overview of the Position -

The Heads of School is the second line of leadership and play a pivotal role in the school’s functioning. They are expected to provide inspiration and strong leadership to the teaching teams and ensure that the school continues to deliver the highest standards of teaching-learning across the board, while ensuring effective administration across the school. They are expected to lead by example and embody the school’s vision, mission, values and goals.

Duties and responsibilities -

Leadership and Management

  • Treat all staff fairly, equitably and with dignity and respect to create and maintain a positive school culture.
  • Acknowledge the responsibilities and celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams.
  • To take appropriate action when performance is unsatisfactory.
  • To regularly review own practice, set personal targets and take responsibility for own growth and development.
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
  • Reporting of all matters of concern or as periodic updates to the Principal.

Teaching and Learning

  • Ensure a culture and ethos of challenge and support where all students can achieve success and become engaged in their own learning.
  • Assess, monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching standards and learning and the delivery of the curriculum across the board in order to build on success and identify and act on areas of improvement.
  • Assign teachers to classes and subjects based on credentials and requirements with a sign off from the Principal.
  • Work with the time-table committee to create a timetable based on guidelines given by the Curriculum Sub-Committee.
  • Drive and monitor the delivery of the curriculum along with advisors / Curriculum Sub-Committee through weekly meetings, by examining the work of the students and through class observations.
  • Heads of Departments / Subject Leads / Coordinators will be part of this monitoring process as well.
  • To evaluate academic print material (planners, diaries, report cards, etc).
  • To prepare an ‘annual calendar’ along with the Principal.
  • To attend all scheduled meetings such as Departmental Meetings, weekly / monthly / quarterly meetings, Form meetings etc. which may be defined by the Principal and amended from time to time as per requirement.
  • Monitor and evaluate students’ attainment levels.
  • Ensure that teachers provide high quality and individualized reports at the end of each term; hold detailed discussions regularly with teachers in order to provide child-specific and relevant details of children’s progress.
  • Encourage the further development of a wide-range of co-scholastic programmes.
  • Staff

  • Ensure effective planning, allocation, support and evaluation of work undertaken by teams and individuals, ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities.
  • Creating an inspiring, professional work environment and modelling behaviour consistent with the school’s values and aspirations.
  • Identify academic staff needs for present / new academic year.
  • Be a part of the recruitment process for relevant staff positions, in collaboration with the Principal and HR department.
  • Staff orientation - Appoint mentors for new staff members, familiarise them with their roles and expectations and communicate clear expectations about performance and behaviour.
  • Ensure that the training needs of new staff are met which includes induction to school culture, class management, interaction with parents, handling of PTMs and writing progress report cards of students.
  • Nurture, mentor and counsel staff. Evaluate their strengths and give feedback regularly, suggesting how to work on areas of improvement.
  • Delegate responsibilities to ensure shared ownership of the school’s success and empower others to make critical decisions.
  • Develop strategies for team building and work consciously to foster strong bonds within team members.
  • Performance Management of Staff

  • To stay connected with the teachers on a routine basis.
  • To regularly monitor and manage teacher performance.
  • To observe classes on a regular basis, document this feedback and share it regularly with the Principal.
  • All difficult meetings with staff should be documented and signed by the particular  Staff member as proof of counselling.
  • Identify training needs of faculty and communicate the same to the Curriculum Sub-Committee / Principal.
  • To recommend staff for confirmation / extension of probation as requested by the HR / Principal / HR Sub-Committee.
  • To hold / attend all meetings throughout the year as per the meeting schedule prepared with the Principal.
  • Admissions

  • Arrange for and attend interactions with prospective parents / students and provide feedback to the Principal.
  • Articulate to prospective parents the pedagogy and delivery of the curriculum and share with them the ethos and values of the school.
  • Make final recommendations of new admissions to the Principal.
  • Lead the orientation process for new students and parents.
  • Authorise letters of withdrawals / Transfer Certificates.
  • Student Welfare, Monitoring and Progress

  • Chair regular meetings with various departments to monitor progress, establish strengths and identify areas of improvement for students.
  • Interact regularly with students and develop meaningful relationships with them.
  • Handle disciplinary matters with the help of the disciplinary committee.
  • Lead assemblies, school and class events.
  • Work with the ‘Student council’, both at primary and secondary levels.
  • Review students’ profiles on the school ERP.
  • Parent Interface

  • Set the tone and model the values of the school in interactions with students, families and the community.
  • Provide opportunities for parents to grow in their understanding of the school’s curriculum and mission.
  • Meet with parents who seek an audience for any matter related to school. Some meetings might require the presence of the Principal / class teacher / counsellor / Head of Department etc., which must be organised promptly.
  • Communication

  • Oversee the print run of magazines, newsletters, circulars, or any other communication with the school / parent community.
  • Prepare communication and circulars for parents about matters relating to the specific section of the school. Eg : . field trips, academic programmes, assessments, special programmes etc. and forward them to the Principal’s office for final approval.
  • School Functions

  • Host functions / events related to respective parts of the school - morning assembly, parent orientation, athletic meet, grandparents’ day, world music / dance day, art exhibitions, cultural events and any other function / event that may be required from time to time.
  • Curriculum Implementation

  • Work closely with the curriculum advisors to gain a complete understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Ensure effective implementation of the curriculum as per the guidelines given by the management / advisors.
  • Organise weekly lesson plan meetings with teachers along with the respective curriculum coordinator so that the curriculum is delivered as per the outlined pedagogy.
  • Provide mentoring, supervision, professional support and guidance to the curriculum coordinators and teachers in understanding all aspects of the curriculum in detail and developing daily lesson plans based on the unit plans.
  • Ensure that small group in-house trainings are held once a week.
  • Suggest training requirements based on teacher observation to the principal / management.
  • Observe lessons regularly and mentor / model good teaching practices in the classroom.
  • Ensure proper induction and appropriate guidance is given to new staff to implement the curriculum
  • CBSE

  • Assist the CBSE inspection body during inspection for extension of affiliation as and when required.
  • Adhere to CBSE bylaws and requirements for overall functioning of the Wing.
  • To bring to the notice of the Principal, any violation / oversight in CBSE Bylaws that may come to your knowledge.
  • PROFILE REQUIREMENT -

  • Must be well qualified with at least a graduate / postgraduate degree from a reputed college / university in any subject (scholastic subject only) being taught at the relevant wing for which the candidate is applying.
  • Have performed administrative duties and exhibited leadership qualities.
  • Have attended professional courses / training sessions by external and internal resources and possess a fair understanding of the latest National Education Policy and latest National Curriculum Framework.
  • Possess good interpersonal skills and have a high emotional quotient
  • Have a good command over the English language - both oral and written.
  • Be willing to undergo external review to assess competencies and areas of improvement.
  • Be aware of the thematic / integrated curriculum
  • Have an active personal interest in either performing arts / visual arts / art & craft or sports and a good understanding / experience of at least one of the disciplines.
  • International Curriculum Experience will be a preference.
